more abandoned buildings
OK, so the Japanese island intrigued me... Here's a web site showcasing various abandoned buildings, mostly in New Jersey. Not quite so creepy when they're in color instead of black & white. :) There's also The Gobbler. The creepy part there wasn't so much that it was abandoned, but that some person actually designed such atrocious rooms, and people paid to sleep in them. The pictures at Lileks are just from the brochure, but here are some more recent pictures. Of course, even *more* recently, it was bulldozed to make way for a convention center. Oh well, I guess creepy old buildings can only take up space for so long.

Nice blog, Bryan - and thank you for the link to my Gobbler site. I actually haven't had a chance to visit Johnson Creek for while, so I don't have photos more recent than the ones that appear on Requiem for the Gobbler Motel. You mention that "even *more* recently, it was bulldozed to make way for a convention center."...were you referring to the junk left after they burned the motel, or did they raze the restaurant down the hill, too? Just curious.
Lenka,
In my Google search for sites about The Gobbler, I found this site that said, "The motel was demolished to make way for a new convention center. While the restaurant still stands, it's currently closed and seems likely to follow the motel's suit before too long." I didn't see a date on the article, so I'm not sure how current that is.
By the way, how did you find my blog? I just posted that yesterday!
Here is another website for you to check out www.abandonedbutnotforgotten.com
It has alot of abandoned buildings in various areas but NJ has alot also.
Cool, thanks for the link! I doubt anyone is going to be checking this old post for comments, but I'll throw this one out there too: www.deadmalls.com. I'm not sure why I find abandoned spaces so fascinating; I guess because they're built to house and serve people, so it's weird to see them completely devoid of human beings.
