new york city, w00t

My friends and I will be visiting New York City either MLK or Presidents' Day weekend, so we can see Wicked before Idina Menzel leaves the cast to go film the movie version of Rent (several of the original Broadway cast members from Rent, including Idina, have already agreed to do the film). Some of us may also see Avenue Q while there. Flights out of Akron-Canton are pretty cheap, as low as $120 round trip per person, and we may stay with a friend's grandmother and/or share a hotel room. It would be about that much money for gas and wear'n'tear on the car anyway, not to mention the extra time and the joy of driving in NYC and possibility of a snowstorm. Tickets are pricey, but I've never seen a show on Broadway and I'd really like to see these two shows in particular with the original cast (or quasi-original cast in the case of Wicked). w00t

Bryan--I am SO jealous. Kristy and I rocked NYC earlier in the month and can't wait to go back.

Agreed. I love NYC! My estimates are that your tickets to Wicked and AveQ will cost more than the transportation and lodging for your trip. You should see if you can get into a taping of the Daily show! Those tickets are free :)
Hotels are incredibly expensive, but if you're going in a group, you may want to check out the hostels. Tom's Mom was able to endure one when she was there, so you should be able to rough it too.
And don't forget: There's this cream puff store near Astor Place that sells the awesomest cream puffs... highly recommended!

Lisa: We could stay in a youth hostel!
Bart: Ugh. I do NOT want another lecture from a German backpacker about how we don't appreciate the National Park system!

But seriously, we will most likely be staying with the aforementioned grandmother. It sort of depends on how many people are going. Good idea on the Daily Show, I didn't think of that. Conan O'Brien would be cool too. We were trying to think of other stuff to do during the day, since the show(s) would be in the evening.

Sorry about the multiple deleted comments... I tried to post that one this morning and even after refreshing and using various web browsers it wouldn't show up. Then I tried it this afternoon and it posts all five of 'em. Whatever.

You'll find that NYC is super pricey, so here's a few good ways to save money:

1. Instead of paying oodles of money to see ellis island and the statue of liberty, take the staten island ferry and then turn around and come back to manhattan. It's totally free and you get some great views from the boat.
2. Bring your student ID if you plan to go to any museums. I'm sure you still have yours. My 2 year old BG ID worked when I was in NYC in march, and it saved me mucho $$$ on museum admissions
3. If you're a drinker, look for drink specials and happy hour. They're usually advertised.
4. Go to the cream puff store and bring me back a dozen, I'll gladly pay you lots and lots of money for some :)
