cawwwwwffee

Another Saturday morning, and I'm at my usual hangout, Jim's Coffeehouse in downtown Elyria. I guess I'm a regular now. (And also a nnnnnnerd, hence the laptop with the free wireless internet at the coffeehouse.)

It seems to me that business is picking up. Last week, a random group of 15 people stopped by, presumably on their way to a wedding or some other dress-up affair. Meanwhile, a gaggle of lawyers discussed the news of the day. Today, there are two age-enhanced ladies (olda wimmin) at the next table, and a flock of college students discussing a class project at another.

Now this is a coffeehouse! I'm glad Elyria finally has a place like this. And no, Arabica doesn't count; Jim serves coffee in real mugs, not styrofoam. :)

Oh, and the scones are *awesome*.

So, if you were going to tell an old-time Elyrian where this place is (you know, like "where the old Neisner's was" or something like that) where would it be?

Hm-m-m... Maybe you will need to ask your dad where Neisner's used to be...

Haha, well I'd tell you it's on the lower level of the Flowers by Sharon store, but I don't think they've been there that long either.

I think I remember people saying there was a department store there at one time. Or a mattress store? The basement had display cases built into the walls.

Or, just drive down Broad Street, look for Lake Avenue (the one that goes toward the Riverwalk), directly across from Ely Square. There's currently a white vinyl banner on the building that says "Jim's Coffeehouse" with a big red arrow pointing down. The entrance is right there off of the Lake Avenue side of the building.

Oh, and you specifically should enjoy this place, Anne, because Jim Deery ran against Bill Grace in the mayoral primary a few years ago. ;)

Hmm, come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever had a plain old coffee at Arabica; I usually get some specialty drink, which probably wouldn't fit in a standard size mug.

Besides, Arabica is technically in Sheffield, not Elyria. :)

(Incidentally, the Arabica chain was started by the owners of Phoenix Coffee, a Cleveland area roaster who also supplies Jim's.)

Well, that was the old Bell Co., a men's clothing store, of course. I believe the lower level was known as "the Collegiate Shop" or something like that, for you younger folks.
