"I think that's how Chicago got started..."
"...A bunch of people in New York said, 'Gee, I'm enjoying the crime and the poverty, but it just isn't cold enough. Let's go west.'

Did I mention a long-time friend of mine is getting married this April? Yes, Tom and Kristy will be chaining the proverbial ball -- er, I mean, tying the proverbial knot -- at long last. They've now settled in Chicago, a quaint village on the shores of Lake Michigan somewhere between NYC and LALA Land, the only two American cities that matter.
This being my first trip to said municipality in my adult life, I decided to make a mini-vacation out of it. I'll be flying in on Thursday so I'll have all of Friday (Good Friday, as it turns out) to do whatever I want. I've already bought tickets to see Wicked, and got excellent seats this time -- no squinting from the upper balcony like Toronto. I'll be staying in a hotel downtown. I'm flying back Sunday in time for Easter dinner with the family, and obviously there's a wedding and reception Saturday, so Friday is really my only time to do stuff. I'm looking forward to it.
I've already gotten ideas for my Friday adventures from talking to people and consulting my AAA TourBook, but if anyone else has suggestions on things to see or places to eat, feel free to comment.

Hey, Bryan - do you want to get together and eat or something? We will probably be staying in the same hotel or one close by.
That would be cool. I'll be staying at the Fairfield (or rather, I will be once I actually make reservations).
Wow, gratz Tom!
Guess I'll see you on Saturday AM for the DEEEEE-LUX Breakfast!
By the way, does anybody know when this whole shindig starts? That is to say, should I try to squeeze in something on Saturday AM?
This is our vacation for the year, too. although we'll be driving and paying $38/day to park our car... and I'm betting that since we'll be coming on Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday morning they will call that THREE days...we're going to see blueman group on Friday night and Sunday morning we were thinking of going to the Navy Pier to the childrens museum to the Blueman Group "making waves" exhibit (perfect timing since my own personal ball and chain will be teaching a unit on sound waves after spring break).

gah, personal ball & chain
Rumor has it that physical invitations will be arriving in the mail any moment now. :)
Wow, $38/day. For 3 days, it costs as much as my plane ticket, and that's not including gas. But then, you have two people, and I don't have to leave my car at the airport.
I'm not going to bother trying to squeeze anything in on Sunday, since my flight leaves around noon.
I've been instructed by many-several people to attend the museum at the Art Institute of Chicago. I must refrain from singing "Sunday in the park with George" out loud upon viewing Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
Then there's the Shedd Aquarium, Millennium Park, the Field Museum (with the largest known complete T-rex assemblage), possibly Lincoln Park, although I'm not that enthused by zoos. Someone also suggested I eat at Ed Debevic's, although I can't recall why.
Aside from that I'm perfectly contented to just walk around, hoping no one notices me looking at the buildings. And hoping no rent-a-cops shout "no pitchas!" at me like in New York City.
